A hands-on experience for future Concept Artists
Before learning to paint digitally, it is essential to know the techniques of traditional painting.
For this reason, students in the Master in Concept Art participated in a unique educational experience, organized together with the team from the Magic Warrior game store in Silea, Italy..
During this workshop, each student was given a model of Warhammer 40K to customize. The entire day was devoted to painting the miniature, taking care of every single detail.
The creative process consisted of several stages:
- drafting the basic black
- application of gray dry brush to create contrasts
- drafting of armor colors
Why this art is essential
Through this technique, students were able to directly experience how to realize contrasts, lights and shadows on three-dimensional surfaces, learning in just a few hours fundamental concepts for digital drawing, texturing and the use of software such as Substance Painter.
It was an experience enlightening and highly formative for the students of BigRock, who were able to experience firsthand how traditional arts can contribute to the understanding and mastery of more modern techniques.
BigRock's approach: learning by doing
This workshop perfectly represents BigRock's teaching philosophy: learning by doing.
Every course, every lesson, every project is designed to push students to go beyond theory and immediately put what they learn into practice.
ABigRock you learn to think like an artist: not only by observing, but mostly by experimenting. Whether modeling a 3D character, painting a miniature, or creating a digital concept, the goal is always the same - to train the eye and hand to think creatively and technically at the same time.
The days here are not just about classes: they are made up of challenges, collaborations, mistakes and moments of discovery. Students work together with their professors, sharing ideas, learning from their mistakes and discovering, step by step, that growth comes from constant discussion and practice.
In an environment where each project becomes a small experiment, BigRock teaches that there is no separation between traditional and digital art, but one great form of expression that changes only in the tools.
And it is precisely this way of teaching-direct, hands-on, and passionate-that prepares students to face the world of creative work with awareness and confidence, where ideas matter as much as the ability to turn them into images.
Here you will find some shots from this day.
