The maquettes are plasticine sculptures that the CG Master's students making during pre-production week and the Concept Art students making during Character Design week.
It is in fact the first time that a character designed for film or video games has gone from two-dimensional form (the drawing) to three-dimensional form.
By sculpting plasticine, in fact, the proportions and volumes of the character are immediately clear and can be modified in time, before it "goes into the pipeline" and is therefore more difficult then to fix without creating damage to the production.
But the maquette is not only derived from a drawing.
There is a story behind it. A story sometimes even a fantastic one, which serves to give a background and a reason why the character has to be made into a certain type.
This is not only an exercise in manual skills, in refining the children's visual perception. It is an exercise in creativity, in unlocking processes of creation and lateral thinking.
